In United States of America (USA), the Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday in the month of November.

In USA, Thanksgiving is a federal holiday which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season.

In United States, Thanksgiving has been an annual tradition since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”, to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

Thanksgiving Day Celebrations in USA :

On Thanksgiving Day, families and friends usually gather for a large meal or dinner which is mainly centered around a Turkey, hence the day is also known as Turkey Day.

At many places, churches are decorated with cornucopias, pumpkins, corn, wheat sheaves, and other harvest bounty and harvest hymns are sung.

Traditions such as parades and football are also the part of American Thanksgiving. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually every Thanksgiving Day in New York while America’s Thanksgiving Parade is held in Detroit. These parades are broadcast on TV.

The National Football League (NFL) also holds a nationally televised match known as the “Thanksgiving Classic”.

The day after Thanksgiving is a day off for some companies and most schools and often the largest shopping day of the year, popularly known as Black Friday .
